John Stenson

John Stenson was born in the townland of Ballincurry, Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo around 1910. He was raised on his parents farm in a stone, two room, thatch roofed cottage. He followed his older sisters to the United States where he joined the New York City fire Department. He put himself through college and attained the rank of Captain in the Fire Department. Upon retirement, John and his wife Nancy returned to Ireland. They lived for a number of years in Dublin befor returning to their native soil in the northwest of Ireland. John and Nancy lived independently in the town of Ballina, Co. Mayo. After Nancy passed away, John entered a nursing home in Ballina. After a short stay in the home, on the evening of November 1, 2001, John left the home for a stroll by the river Moy. No one knows exactly what happened, but John somehow fell into the river and drowned. His body was found two days later a few hundred yards downstream from the home.
